Generali GmbH
Industry: Insurance
Headquarters: Munich
Generali Deutschland Informatik Services GmbH (GDIS) is the IT service provider of the Generali Deutschland Group, the second-largest primary insurance group in Germany. Generali Deutschland is part of the international Generali Group, which originated in Italy almost 200 years ago and today has around 71,000 employees in more than 50 countries. The German part of Generali includes Generali Deutschland Versicherung, AachenMünchener Lebensversicherung, CosmosDirekt, Dialog, Central Krankenversicherung, Advocard Rechtsschutzversicherung and Deutsche Bausparkasse Badenia. GDIS has offices in Aachen and Hamburg and provides IT services for all group companies. Alongside operating a multi-platform infrastructure, its core competencies include developing powerful, future-proof IT applications. In times of digitalisation, being able to make data-driven decisions is essential to meet the challenges of the future and to offer customers the best possible service.
As a central pillar of its vision of a data-driven insurance company, GDIS is building the Platform for Analytics and Data Insights (PADI). At its heart is the data lake – a data hub containing the data of all group companies. A data portal lets users look up information on all available data and request access to it. Three areas build on the data portal – reporting, data exploration and operational analytics – each of which needs the data in a different form. Data can be combined into report dashboards and made available to management. In a self-service BI approach, an intelligent search function lets users find data quickly, explore it independently, analyse it and combine it freely. The broad data foundation leaves room for analytics use cases: decentralised machine learning teams can develop analytical models for requirements such as risk calculation, fraud management or product development. In customer use cases, this has delivered cost benefits in the seven-figure range. The platform provides key information and insights as a sound basis for decisions. PADI thus paves the way for the next generation of products and services at Generali.
GDIS chose Talend for several reasons. Its connectors make it possible to integrate most of the highly diverse and complex systems in PADI. The Talend product owner at GDIS emphasises efficiency: “As a modern, graphical and easily extensible ETL tool that lets us develop Spark jobs at the click of a button, Talend also allows us to make full use of our Hadoop cluster. With Talend, we serve a range of databases, from DB2 and Hive to an Exasol database. To keep development effort low, we also use the dynamic column feature, which lets us connect generic jobs to a wide variety of source data.” As Talend is Java-based, the know-how was essentially already available in the company. Last but not least, Talend offers an attractive pricing model.
After initial contact and discussions at the Talend User Group, GDIS also chose cimt because of its strong references. “The team brought in-depth knowledge and, with their expertise and new ideas, helped move the project forward – even beyond the actual problem,” says the Talend product owner at GDIS. Alongside its core topic Talend, cimt also supports GDIS with its test strategy, where major progress has already been made. “Working with the cimt colleagues runs extremely smoothly and transparently – especially in an agile context,” the Talend product owner adds.

GEMA orchestrates more than 580 cross-team processes with millions of records centrally using Camunda. cimt developed the process control and supported the migration to Google Cloud.

Panasonic Europe digitalises hundreds of approval processes with one generic BPMN model and DMN decision tables in Camunda; cimt is responsible for the methodological design and supports the implementation.

GEMA used SQL, Excel and manual reconciliation for its reporting. cimt supported the build-up of a lakehouse platform with Databricks, through which business units now receive their data automatically – in under two hours instead of two to three days.
