About the Otto Group

Founded in Germany in 1949, the Otto Group is a globally active retail and services group with around 41,000 employees in 30 major corporate groups, operating mainly in the economic regions of Germany, Europe and the USA. Its business activities cover the segments of platforms, brand concepts, retailers, services and financial services.

The project: migration to GCP

cimt was responsible for migrating a customer-centric on-premisess application to the cloud. This included implementing a new service based on GCP technology and building the necessary cloud infrastructure using IaC.

The challenge

The previous application was based on Talend and was self-hosted on an OpenShift cluster. Further development, maintenance and operation of the application and the infrastructure became increasingly difficult due to the existing configuration. The complexity of the setup limited the scope for changes. In addition, maintaining security and compliance was time-consuming.

The solution approach

cimt implemented a containerised Java service to replace the Talend application and eliminate the weaknesses of the previous application. Managed GCP services were used for the infrastructure to keep operating effort as low as possible. It was also ensured that the infrastructure can be provisioned automatically at any time and that there is an automated deployment process for new features.

The result

With cimt’s cloud-based solution, OTTO’s BI department can respond to changes in the application and infrastructure in a technology-neutral way. The new setup has created a robust and scalable infrastructure that minimises operating effort and simplifies the implementation and rollout of new features. Thanks to cloud technologies, operating costs were reduced by around 60%.

Compared to the previous solution, the use of Google Cloud technologies has created a more robust setup that simplifies future development and offers a high degree of flexibility. Operating costs were also reduced and the potential for further development increased. As a result, KPIs such as time to market for new features were significantly reduced.

GEMA used SQL, Excel and manual reconciliation for its reporting. cimt supported the build-up of a lakehouse platform with Databricks, through which business units now receive their data automatically – in under two hours instead of two to three days.
