The customer

Sievert SE is a specialist in building materials and logistics solutions with more than 100 years of experience. With its own research and development department, Sievert develops innovative and recyclable building materials. Its portfolio ranges from modern dry mortar systems and intelligent logistics concepts to tailor-made services for retail, trades and industry. Its five product brands quick-mix, akurit, tubag, strasser and hahne offer a broad range of premium-quality system building materials. To advise customers in the best possible way, the Sievert architect and project service offers a wide range of services throughout the entire lifecycle of projects. The company’s particular expertise also includes intelligently networked logistics. Around 1,600 employees work for the family-run company at 60 locations in Germany, Europe and China.

The challenge

In the course of dynamic company growth and structural development in recent years, Sievert SE faced increasing complexity in its data landscape. Various business processes were based on isolated systems (ERP, CRM, PIM, logistics), which led to data silos and inconsistent data-driven decision-making.

This made consistent management of controlling processes more difficult and required additional manual effort to prepare decision-relevant information. In addition, the business departments were losing confidence in the data quality of the KPIs.

As the migration and modernisation of central operational systems such as ERP and CRM was also on the agenda, the company no longer wanted to postpone the problems it had identified. Given the growing need for additional expertise in enterprise data management and the related architecture approaches and technologies, Sievert SE relies on the expertise of cimt’s consultants.

The solution

The need for action was clear, but the approach and the specific technology still had to be explored. Since the existing data management architecture had to be fundamentally redesigned, Sievert did not want to do this without a requirements analysis.

That is why Sievert started the project with a two-day workshop, in which we analysed the existing challenges and requirements together with the customer. The initial focus was not on selecting tools, but on determining the actual needs for the data strategy and understanding fundamental architecture concepts such as data lake, data warehouse, data lakehouse and data hub – always in the context of the company’s specific processes.

After identifying the use cases from controlling and sales that offered the greatest potential for implementation in a proof of concept, the suitable architecture approaches were discussed. It quickly became clear that the most urgent need was an analytical data platform in the form of a scalable cloud data warehouse. To connect the source systems, Sievert relied on flexible data modelling with Data Vault on the one hand and on a service infrastructure with data pipelines on the other.

Taking into account requirements such as extensibility, operating costs, functionality and innovation potential, a combination of the Talend Data Integration Platform, Snowflake and Power BI as the visualisation tool emerged. With this setup, we started the pilot implementation and delivered a data mart including the associated data loading and modelling within five weeks. This confirmed both the technical feasibility and the immediately usable business value of the solution.

The technical foundation built in the process was already so complete that it could be used almost without extension for the full implementation of the controlling and sales use cases. In addition to the automated and timely delivery of operational data, the data pipelines brought the long-awaited quality assurance and standardisation of KPI calculation.

Another focus was the creation of interactive dashboards for detailed contribution margin analyses and commission calculations. Creating individual reports based on self-calculated KPIs became a thing of the past – another step towards more transparency and trust in the data foundation.

To handle the variety of data, a centralised, maintainable “golden dataset” was built that maps planned and actual data at different levels of granularity. The aim was to provide consistent and comparable KPIs for several Power BI reports. The challenge was to model numerous fact tables with varying temporal and content depth consistently. The solution had to scale both for aggregated KPIs and for fine-grained individual documents.

For this purpose, a star schema data model was developed which, by separating fact and dimension tables, provides a stable and extensible architecture. Specially adapted DAX measures were used to handle the differences in granularity. They allow flexible calculations across different time levels and analysis contexts – with consistent report logic. The implementation was carried out in close cooperation with the business departments and resulted in a robust, reusable model for all sales-related analyses.

Based on this model, the introduction of role-based access control (row-level security, RLS) was also prepared. This means content can be tailored to specific target groups and restricted to individual regions or sales staff in compliance with data protection requirements. Access is controlled via single sign-on (SSO) in combination with Active Directory (AD), Microsoft Azure and Snowflake.

The newly built KPI system now reaches more than 100 users, and the number is growing. New operational data is being integrated, and the functionality is being extended to further business areas such as product management, production and logistics. The potential of the data foundation for data science and machine learning is being explored for new use cases.

Roles and consulting topics

cimt played a decisive role in the project. Thanks to our many years of experience as a Talend Platinum Partner and our comprehensive know-how in data integration and IT project management, the project was implemented successfully.

cimt’s consultants took on several key roles:

  • Technical lead: cimt ensured the strategic direction and efficient implementation of the project. Its expertise created the technical foundation for a future-proof data platform.
  • Project coordinator: Coordinating all activities and ensuring smooth collaboration between the various teams were essential for success. cimt played a central role in bringing the business departments together, putting requirements management into practice and aligning the areas involved throughout the implementation steps.
  • Data architect: In addition to the functional design, a scalable data management architecture had to be designed. The focus was on aligning the technologies used with the company’s needs.
  • Data engineers / software developers: Developing and adapting the data pipelines and integrating them into the existing IT infrastructure required data integration expertise, which cimt provided with its Talend experts.
  • Front-end developer: The data aggregated in the data marts was used as the basis for creating a semantic data model and designing dashboards and reports with Power BI.
  • Training: To ensure sustainable use of the system, training sessions were held for Sievert’s IT colleagues, covering Talend best practices, Data Vault basics and the use of various frameworks for data loading and modelling.

Thanks to cimt’s professional work, the first important project milestones were completed successfully, and the customer received lasting support on its way to a modern, scalable data architecture.

“With cimt and Snowflake, we have a central, trustworthy data foundation for the first time – the basis for data-driven decisions in all business areas.”

Walter Dornheim,
Head of IT-Business-Solutions, SIEVERT SE

The result

Within 12 months, the project led to a significantly improved data foundation and the automation of key processes in several areas. Bonus calculation is now transparent, traceable and possible without manual effort. Sales and controlling dashboards provide a sound basis for decisions, and additional logistics KPIs (including OTIF) provide reliable metrics for delivery performance.
There have been positive effects in particular with regard to the usability and governance of source data for management processes:

  • The transparency of how key KPIs are derived has improved
  • KPIs are documented more thoroughly
  • Insights gained from the source data analysis increased data quality in both operational and analytical systems
  • Eliminating multiple interpretations and avoiding follow-up errors reduced the extra effort needed to reconcile reports
  • A central role-based authorisation concept for data access and report usage ensures that information is provided according to need

The technical foundation is future-proof, and adjustments are made flexibly by the cimt managed service team. The project has also led to further business implementations at Sievert in cooperation with cimt.
