Confluent is now part of IBM – cimt remains your partner for Kafka

IBM has completed its acquisition of Confluent. Until the acquisition, cimt was an official Confluent partner – and we continue to help organisations design, set up, optimise and operate Confluent and Apache Kafka.

Background

Confluent now belongs to IBM

IBM announced the acquisition of Confluent in December 2025 and completed it in March 2026. Confluent has developed Apache Kafka into an enterprise platform for event streaming and is now becoming part of IBM’s data and AI portfolio. IBM has announced that Confluent will continue as an independent brand within IBM.

Many organisations that use Kafka or Confluent in production are now asking what the acquisition means for their streaming platform. For our customers, the answer is clear: they can continue to rely on our experience.

“The acquisition does not change our experience with Confluent and Kafka. We continue to support our customers from design to operations – and advise them independently of which company the platform belongs to today.”

– Rouven Homann, Member of the Executive Board, cimt Group

Assessment

What the acquisition means for existing environments

Existing Kafka and Confluent environments continue to run. Apache Kafka remains an open source project of the Apache Software Foundation. How products, licensing models and partner programmes will develop under IBM will become clear over the coming months.

We therefore recommend that organisations assess the situation calmly: which dependencies exist, which operating model fits in the long term, and which options are available – from continuing with Confluent to open source Kafka or a combination with classic data integration.

Einordnung
